Keeping an eye on your engine oil is one of the simplest and most important things you can do to keep your car running smoothly. The best part? It doesn’t take long at all — you can do it in under five minutes, right in your driveway.

Even if you’re not super confident around cars, this is a quick and easy check that anyone can learn. Here’s how to do it.

Why Engine Oil Matters

Think of engine oil as the lifeblood of your car. It keeps everything lubricated, prevents overheating, and helps your engine last longer. Running low on oil — or using dirty oil — can lead to serious (and expensive) engine problems.

So, making this a regular habit is definitely worth it.

Step 1: Park on Level Ground and Turn Off the Engine

Make sure your car is on a flat surface. If it’s slanted, you won’t get an accurate reading. Also, wait about 5–10 minutes after turning off the engine so the oil has time to settle into the oil pan.

Step 2: Pop the Bonnet and Find the Dipstick

Open your bonnet (check your car manual if you’re unsure how) and look for the dipstick. It usually has a brightly colored handle — yellow, orange, or red — and is labeled “Engine Oil” in many cars.

Step 3: Pull the Dipstick Out and Wipe It

Pull the dipstick out completely and use a clean rag or paper towel to wipe off any oil. You’re going to reinsert it in a second to get an accurate reading.

Step 4: Insert the Dipstick and Pull It Out Again

Put the dipstick all the way back in, then pull it out again and hold it horizontally. Look at where the oil line reaches.

There are usually two markers — “MIN” and “MAX” or dots/lines indicating safe levels. If the oil level is between the two marks, you’re good. If it’s at or below the minimum, it’s time to top up.

Step 5: Check the Condition of the Oil

While you’re at it, take a quick look at the color and consistency. Fresh oil is usually amber or golden and fairly smooth. If it’s dark, gritty, or smells burnt, it might be time for an oil change.

Topping It Up (If Needed)

If your oil is low, grab the correct oil type for your vehicle (check the owner’s manual), unscrew the oil cap (usually near the dipstick), and pour in a little at a time. Don’t overfill — check the dipstick again after adding small amounts.

A Small Step That Goes a Long Way

Checking your oil is one of those small jobs that can save you from big headaches. Doing it every few weeks — or before a long trip — helps keep your engine healthy and your car running smoothly.
