Nobody wakes up thinking, “Today’s the day I’ll need a tow truck.” But car trouble doesn’t always give you a heads-up. One moment you’re cruising to work or heading out for groceries, and the next—you’re stranded on the side of the road, wondering what to do next. So, when exactly should you call a tow truck? Is it only when your car won’t start? Or are there other times when it’s just the smarter (and safer) choice?

We’ve been in the towing game for years, and we’ve seen all sorts of roadside dramas—some obvious, some not so much. Let’s walk through the most common situations where calling a tow truck makes total sense.

1. Your Car Won’t Start—At All

This one’s pretty straightforward. You turn the key (or push the button), and… nothing. No engine noise, no cranking, maybe just a click—or total silence.

This could be a flat battery, a faulty starter motor, or something electrical. If you’re in a safe location and someone nearby has jumper cables, a quick jump-start might get you going. But if you’ve already tried that and the car still won’t start, it’s time to call in the professionals.

We once had a customer in Coburg who kept trying to jump-start his car for 45 minutes. Turned out the alternator had failed, so even with a boost, the battery wouldn’t hold a charge. A tow was the only real fix—and calling earlier could’ve saved him a lot of frustration.

2. After an Accident

Even if your car looks driveable after a crash, it might not be safe to keep going. Internal damage isn’t always obvious. Bent axles, damaged suspension, fluid leaks, or alignment issues can make the car dangerous to drive—even at low speeds.

We towed a vehicle in Richmond that had been rear-ended. The driver thought it was just a bumper issue—until the wheel started pulling hard to one side a few blocks later. Thankfully, he called us before things got worse.

If airbags have deployed, parts are hanging off, or you’re unsure about the damage—don’t risk it. Let a tow truck handle it.

3. Flat Tyres Without a Spare (or the Tools)

Flat tyre on the freeway? No spare in the boot? You’re not alone—many newer cars come without one. And even if you do have a spare, changing a tyre on a busy road or in bad weather isn’t always safe or doable.

If you don’t have the proper jack, tools, or confidence to change it, don’t feel bad. It’s what we’re here for. We had a callout in Thomastown where a driver tried changing his tyre in the rain, slipped, and nearly dropped the car off the jack. Luckily, no one was hurt—but it was a close call.

Sometimes, it’s just safer to wait and let someone with the right gear handle it.

4. Overheating or Mechanical Failure

If your temperature gauge is spiking or steam’s pouring from under the bonnet—pull over and switch off the engine immediately. Driving an overheating car, even for a few minutes, can turn a small repair into a blown head gasket or warped engine.

Same goes for strange noises (clunking, grinding), smoke, oil leaks, or sudden loss of power. If your gut tells you something’s off, don’t ignore it.

One of our customers in St Kilda kept driving his overheating car “just a few more streets” to get home. The result? Engine damage that cost thousands to fix. A quick tow would’ve saved the day—and his wallet.

5. You’re Stuck in Mud, Sand, or a Ditch

It happens more often than you’d think. You pull off the road for a scenic view or a quick break, and suddenly the tyres are spinning in soft mud or sand. The more you try to get out, the deeper you sink.

In these situations, spinning your wheels can damage the tyres or drivetrain. If your car’s stuck and rocking back and forth isn’t helping, call for a tow. We once pulled a 4WD out of a drainage ditch in Donvale where the driver tried using floor mats for traction—it only made things worse.

We’ve got the winches, hooks, and skills to recover your car without doing extra damage.

6. Strange Smells or Dashboard Warnings

Burning smells, strong fuel odours, or any warning lights—especially for brakes, oil, or engine—shouldn’t be ignored. Modern cars are full of sensors that give you early warnings. If something seems off and you’re unsure about driving any further, a tow truck is your safest bet.

We helped a driver near Epping whose car started smelling like burning plastic. He thought it was just the heater. A quick check revealed a melted wire under the dash—could’ve caused a fire if he’d kept going.

At the end of the day, calling a tow truck isn’t just about moving your car—it’s about keeping you safe, preventing further damage, and making sure the problem is handled the right way. Whether it’s a dead battery, a flat tyre, or a mysterious smell you can’t quite place, there’s no shame in getting help. Sometimes, it’s the smartest thing you can do.
